Use code 202 at http://signup.dreamhost.com Servers are wobbly atm but I just managed to buy an account. Offer ends at midnight Pacific time tonight. Just thought some of you might be interested. :)
Dreamhost have never been fantastic for reliability in my experience, but at that price I'm not complaining. Plus I guess because of this offer they're getting hit a lot harder than usual. For me and my current financial situation it'll serve as emergency plan b hosting at least. :)
I've never used them, I just know they offer a lot of space and bandwidth so I thought it would be handy for off-site backups or maybe hosting some large files now and then. I don't think I'd host a site with them. At this price it would make a good backup solution
@zenith For that price, it's a bargain at DH (I pay full price yearly myself these days). And dreamhost are really as good as the cluster / webserver (sic) you happen to get allocated to. I was lucky, many weren't as lucky. But yes, without sounding too pumped up, there is a difference between a service provider like Dreamhost and someone aiming at quality over quantity. (Less users per node that can screw others over by excessive usage basically ;))
@dantheman They have a backup solution separate from the web hosting, as a customer one isn't allowed to use the web hosting service to backup files that are "non-web".
Oh they won't let you just store files on there with a web account? Sod that then, I'm getting pissed off waiting for their site to load anyway. I was gonna schedule SSH transfers of some data for backups. I might look at their backup solutions if their site comes back up.
@dantheman It severely screws up the business model if users actually start to use their allocated storage quotas, which is... what? Oh yeah, "unlimited" :P
I've considered Jungle Disk but thought this might work out cheaper and easier. We'll see. I don't really do off-site backups of the files on my laptop at the moment. Just multiple local backups to USB disks. If there was more vital data I'd worry about it more urgently I suppose ;)

@zenith: Interesting, off to read that now. I'm considering Dreamhost for cost effective off-site backups and even media hosting

@dantheman Yeah, I'd never use them for a high traffic site but for file storage etc they're great.

Having trouble loading the site at the moment, I suspect it's getting hammered. I'll keep trying :)

It took me a while but I got there eventually. Just waiting on the welcome emails now.

I have to say though a web hosting company who's own sales site doesn't load isn't the best advertisement is it? :D

Spent 10mins refreshing it and getting nowhere, will try again later

@dantheman: oh dear oh dear, not a good advertisement at all.

Dreamhost are cool, but I'd never put anything I really want to have online there... :PThey are also quite alright as a registrar imho.

have online ~ stay online ;)

@hypocrisy I agree entirely. Your hosting is way way better and I hope I can carry on with that, it's just an 'if needs must' backup for me. :)

Hmm...I used to use a DH account for storing files. Maybe I was just lucky and didn't get caught. :)

@zenith you are of course welcome to store your entire storage quota worth :P

@dantheman If you want to buy some space, hit me up... Can fix you up with an unmetered account, with ssh (rsync and the lot).

@hypocrisy: Thanks I appreciate the offer, I'll give you a shout if I get myself more organised. I need to decide if I really need off site
